Resources for Medical Students
So you're a medical student interested in sports medicine? Sports medicine physicians approach athletes comprehensively, managing orthopedic, medical, nutritional, and psychosocial issues. Since approximately 90% of sports-related injuries are nonsurgical, sports medicine physicians are well-positioned to manage most athletic injuries.
Choosing a Residency
Traditionally, sports medicine physicians have done their primary training in family medicine, though programs now accept pediatrics, emergency medicine, PM&R, internal medicine, and medicine-pediatrics residents. Choosing a residency with a formal relationship to a sports medicine fellowship can provide more opportunities for networking, research, and coverage â but is not required.
